Sony Corp. said Friday it has agreed to invest $250 million and acquire a minority interest in Epic Games Inc., the U.S. developer of the global hit game Fortnite.

U.S. media reported the deal gives Sony a 1.4 percent stake in the game development studio, which also receives investment from Chinese internet services giant Tencent Holdings Ltd.

Sony said it hopes its alliance with Epic Games, which was established in 1991, will broaden their collaboration beyond the development of game software to film, music and other sectors.

"Through our investment, we will explore opportunities for further collaboration with Epic to delight and bring value to consumers and the industry at large, not only in games, but also across the rapidly evolving digital entertainment landscape," Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said in a statement.

The investment is subject to regulatory approvals, Sony said.

Fortnite, an online video game, can be played on various platforms, including computers, smartphones and game consoles.

Epic Games' software is also expected to be compatible with Sony's next-generation game console PlayStation 5, due to be released by the year-end shopping season.
