Saltwater formations - including salt lakes, salt pans and salt marshes - are geological phenomena occurring due to high concentrations of saline minerals (most commonly sodium chloride) found in rivers and lakes, and on coastal plains. Evaporating water can leave behind vast plains of salt (both natural and man-made), resulting in vivid, and often striking, saltwater formations. 

In this collection, we look at some of the world's most spectacular saltwater formations, as photographed from above.
