A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, blocking the rays of the sun and causing a shadow to appear on Earth. There are three kinds of solar eclipses based on the alignment – total, partial and annular. The solar eclipse on June 21 was annular, which means the moon was so far from the Earth that it did not completely block out the sun, creating what is referred to as a “ring of fire.” It was visible from Asia, Africa, the Pacific, the Indian Ocean, parts of Europe and Australia. A partial eclipse was also visible at some places.
